ADAMAWA ELECTION: PDP DISQUALIFIES ACTING GOVERNOR

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has disqualified the acting governor of Adamawa state, Umaru Fintiri, from contesting the state’s 11 October governorship bye-election under its platform.

The former Speaker of Adamawa State House of Assembly, who took over as acting governor after the impeachment of Governor Murtala Nyako, is ineligible to participate in the party’s 6 September 6.

Some loyalists of Nyako had claimed that Fintiri had defected to the All Progressives Congress.

But the Chairman of PDP screening panel, Ibrahim Mantu, who spoke to journalists after the screening exercise on Saturday, said Fintiri was disqualified on moral grounds.

Acting governor Fintiri has faced mounting criticisms over his decision to contest the election after having masterminded the removal of Nyako.

Other PDP candidates for the poll have accused him of staging a “coup” and lacking the moral right to contest.

‘NIGERIAN ENTERTAINERS LIVE ON FAME’

Veteran Nollywood actor, Kareem Adepoju popularly known as Baba Wande has described Nigerian actors and entertainers as highly rich in fame without corresponding financial wealth to show for it.

He told Arts Dome that it is commonplace in Nigeria to see a celebrated actor and actress who is not rich in terms of monetary worth.

The actor said, "Many Nigerian actors and actresses only have names. They are noble because of their names built over the years through hard work and dedication but no money is attached to the names."
According to him, those among them with good houses and cars acquire such through the grace of God.

He also identified piracy as one of the major challenges confronting the industry while the practitioners remain helpless in tackling it.

Baba Wande added, "I recently celebrated my 50 years in the industry. Everything I have today is through the grace of God. I am happy to be an actor but there is still much to be done by government to encourage the practitioners. In terms of awards, how many of the veterans in the industry have been so honoured? We will continue to make the country proud in the way we know how best to do so. The motivation for me is the fact that people say I am unique in my genre. It is something that keeps me going and motivates me to do more."

The veteran performer further said it was an interesting development seeing young entrants into the industry who continually aspire to do their best. He described such as a good thing for an industry which was once believed to be populated by individuals without substantial goals in life. "I like the way the industry is growing. It is something that all of us are happy about. Before now, people called us unserious because they believed that acting was a job meant for individuals without focus in life. Things have changed now and it is heart-warming that many people are now embracing acting," he added.

The actor has featured in many films such as Ti Oluwanile, Obuko Dudu and Ate Gagara. When asked to recall some of the movies he had featured in, he said, "It will be difficult to remember them. They are so many. Besides, I wrote many films and also featured in many too. I study scripts well and give my best to every role I am called upon to interpret."

WHY I NO LONGER SHOOT MUSIC VIDEOS — OKPECHI

One of Nigeria’s enterprising directors, Uzodinma Okpechi, has said he has moved away from producing music videos having ‘‘pioneered the current revolution’’ in the industry.

He added that even though he no longer handles music videos he could still try his hands on some if the need arises.

Uzodinma, who directed music videos of many award-winning singers such as Sunny Neji, Innocent Idibia (Tuface), Anthony Awotoye (Tony Tetuila), Sammie Okposo and John Asiemo (Daddy Showkey) among others, said he did his best while he was fully involved in the production of music videos.

He said, "I did my best when I was involved in the production of music videos. I no longer do music videos. I pioneered the current revolution in music video production and I feel proud that I created a string of videos while I was involved. While I was directing such videos, my colleagues were busy directing videos for Nollywood because there was no money in music videos then. For me, I believe I have done my best and I have moved on."

Stating that he now shoots videos for documentaries and TV commercials, Uzodinma added that he sometimes "regrets that he switched too early because money started flowing into the shooting of music video after I left that aspect. I am not doing badly now but I regret not making money there when I was fully involved in it."

He also identified noticeable improvement in the current shooting of music videos in terms of camera usage, post-production and the choice of software and hardware for production purposes.

The director however noted that most of the music videos currently on air look similar in form.

"I don’t have any problem with the new technology being employed in the industry. But where I have a worry is in the area of creativity. Most of the videos look alike and there is a monotony of creativity. Most of them lack stories. People just want to shoot glamour; throwing of money and pouring of expensive liquor. I know that videos are for entertainment but there is also the information and education part of them. Foreign videos tell stories. If a costume or picture is used, it will have a particular story it is telling. I don’t see that in our own music videos," he added.

SAIDI BALOGUN VOWS NEVER TO SPEAK TO FATHIA BALOGUN AGAIN

Few years after the rift and the marriage break up of actor Saidi Balogun and actress Fatiha Balogun recently starred in Mercy Aigbe’s new movie “Life After Marriage” and that prompted talk among fans and the media that they had reconciled.

Saidi Balogun in a recent interviewed said he can never talk to her again and that throughout the movie production period their paths never crossed. He also said he has not spoken to her since the rift in 2006. “How can it happen? We didn’t even see on set of the movie, not to talk of reconciling, it’s a big joke. We have not spoken since 2006, where is the love coming from, people don’t understand what’s really going on between us. I believe that’s why they are peddling the rumor. There is no logic in it at all. I think it’s because they saw us in Mercy Aigbe’s new movie, Life After Marriage, that’s why they imagined we’re back in love. The marketer of the movie only used Fathia and myself to promote the movie. And so far people saw the two of us in the movie, they started peddling the rumor that the movie was meant to reconcile us.”

“The funniest thing is that we didn’t act together on the set of the movie. We didn’t even see each other for once. I acted my role separately, she also did hers separately. Our paths didn’t cross at all on the set of Life After Marriage till the production ended. So, I don’t know how people arrived at the conclusion that we have reconciled. After how many years? That’s a big joke. On what basis will that communication be? To be honest, the last time we spoke was 2006. I have since moved on. I thank God for that. We don’t have any reason to talk to each other. It can’t happen at all”
he said

The Nollywood stars have two kids together. Recall that Saidi told Fathia to drop his name ‘Balogun’ which she has done and she is now bearing her father’s name ‘Williams’

I CAN NEVER FIGHT OSOBA, HE IS MY LEADER – AMOSUN

Ogun state governor, Ibikunle Amosun has stated categorically that he can ‘never fight’ Chief Olusegun Osoba, a former governor of the state, noting that, Osoba is his leader and that of their party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
It is widely rumoured that the duo have been fighting over the leadership of the party in the state, a dispute many political analysts say will affect the party in the 2015 general elections but Amosun has dismissed the rumour of a rancour between himself and Osoba.
“I want to say this again, I will never fight Baba Osoba, he remains my leader, our leader and we will continue to accord him all the respect he deserves. I cannot even thinking of fighting him, over what, he is my leader and he will remain so.
“I respect him and will continue to respect him. I can assure you all that everything will be resolved soon, I don’t want to be saying all this on the air but I know that all the crisis will soon become a thing of the past,”
the governor assured.
Amosun then appealed to the good people of the state to assist in persuading Osoba, in order not to go into 2015 elections with a divided house. “I want to appeal to people of substance and all the good people of Ogun to assist in appealing to Baba Osoba to sheath his sword and resolve all that is happening.
“I want to appreciate our people, on a daily basis, I receive at least 2,000 calls and several messages from various people and groups asking me to settle with Baba.”
In May, Osoba said he was not going to reconcile with Amosun again. He insinuated that Amosun wanted to control the whole of the party by himself.
“They said they don’t trust me again; they said they don’t believe in me again, that I will soon forgive and say everything has been settled. They said I will tell them that some Obas have appealed to me.
“I was shocked and asked them what led to this. They said they have concluded and their decision is that everyone should go his or her way. Secondly, they said they are not ready for any harmonisation, not even 70/30, 80/20, 95/5. Is it true or not?”
Osoba asked.
“As I stand before you today, I swear before God and Jesus Christ, my Lord, I promise you all that the issue of forgiveness is no more. If you stand firmly as a warrior, that is enough for me. If you are ready, there is no more room for reconciliation. If thousands of people prostrate, it is what you want that I will do.

JONATHAN LAUNCHES NATIONAL IDENTITY CARD SCHEME

President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday launched a national electronic identity card scheme, which backers said would boost access to financial and government services in Africa’s most populous nation.
The head of state was issued with his own card, which features a credit card-style chip with personal as well as biometric data and doubles up as a prepaid charge and debit card.
A number of Nigerian government agencies, from the police to the Independent National Electoral Commission, have embarked on their own separate ID card schemes.
But Jonathan said the plan was to eventually include details such as driving licence, health insurance, tax and pension information on the single card.
“The regime of duplication of biometric databases must now have to give way to harmonisation and unification with the e-ID scheme, which shall be the primary database,” he told reporters.
Only 32 percent of Nigeria’s adult population are thought to have bank accounts, according to a 2012 study.
Nigeria’s central bank has been pushing for a move away from cash to electronic payments and has trialled a scheme in the financial capital, Lagos, with the help of private partners.
But the pilot project has not been plain sailing, with retailers and customers often facing frequent power supply and connectivity problems that slowed down transactions.
The cards will be available initially to Nigerians aged 16 and older and all residents in the country for more than two years.
Cardholders will be given a unique national identification number and have to provide fingerprint data, a photo and digital signature to cut the risk of fraud and embezzlement.
The scheme has so far cost about seven billion naira ($42.5 million, 32 million euros), according to the National Identity Management Commission.
Financial services firm MasterCard, the scheme’s payment technology provider, said 13 million cards would be available in the first phase, with more than 100 million to be issued in total.
“Nigeria is ready for this,” the firm’s head of Sub-Saharan African operations, Daniel Mohin, told AFP.
“Nigeria has been left out of electronic financial payment for decades but now Nigeria is saying we want to take our rightful place in payment. There has not been a project of this magnitude… that’s been rolled out at this scale.”
Africa’s most populous nation has an unenviable reputation for fraud, particularly involving financial transactions.
But Monehin said the card was “secured with the best form of security that is available”.

BEAT BY DRE: IS D’BANJ ABOUT TO SIGN NEW DEAL?

Koko master, D’banj is indeed happy with himself as he has been able to win many hearts but in music and outside music.

The Nigerian artiste who has featured both in the local and international music scene, seems to be getting it all rosy when it looked as if he was almost forgotten even with criticisms from fans on his ability to remain relevant in the music industry.

Despite all those issues, the artiste still kept his head high. Known as an entrepreneur, D’banj has continued to cross many boundaries with any challenges of any sort.

Following his fight for agricultural development in Nigeria and Africa at large, the singer was recently at world submits held at Washington DC in USA with other Nigerian celebrities. As if that was not good enough, he took another journey to California to meet with one of his mentors, Bobby Shiver who is a member of the Kennedy Family.
Surprisingly, at the just concluded MTV Video Music Awards (VMA), the singer was invited as a VIP Guest by the Vice President Marketing of BEATS by Dre, Jason White. Indeed, the Koko master is really making a name for himself and registering Nigeria’s name on a strong tower.

57-YEAR-OLD MAN IN REMAND FOR STEALING MOSQUITO NET

A 57-year-old man, Lawrence Isidor, has been remanded for two weeks after he was alleged to have stolen a mosquito net belonging to one Mrs. Gracious Odo, a resident on Marble Street, Happy Land Estate in the Ajah area of Lagos State.

It was learnt that the defendant slapped the woman when she accused him of stealing the net.

The defendant was on August 11, arraigned by the police before a Tinubu Magistrate’s Court , on two counts of stealing and assault -- to which he pleaded not guilty.

The charges read, “That you, Lawrence Isidor on August 10, 2014 at about 2pm on Marble Street, Happy Land Estate, Ajah, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did steal one mosquito net value N800, property of Gracious Odo and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 285 (5) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

“That you did unlawfully assault her by slapping her face and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 170 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.”
As of Wednesday when the matter was called for hearing, It was gathered that no surety had shown up to perfect the N5,000 bail condition levied by the magistrate, Mr. T.A. Owolabi.

The prosecutor pleaded that the complainant was not in court due to ill health - an excuse Owolabi frowned on, noting that the defendant was being made to suffer.

When asked what he wanted the court to do for him, the accused, who had no defence counsel, fell on his knees and pleaded the magistrate to discard the case.

“My lord, please, I want the case to be struck out,” he pleaded.

Owolabi, instructed the prosecutor to meet with the complainant before the next adjournment date which was slated for Monday, September 1, 2014.

“I reluctantly accede to the prosecutor’s plea that the complainant is sick. The court shall not hesitate to take the necessary steps if the prosecutor cannot produce the woman in court and establish the veracity of her sickness by Monday,” he said.

SERENA SIZZLES IN LEOPARD DRESS

Serena Williams doesn’t just play fierce.

The five-time champion strode on court for her opening-round US Open match against Taylor Townsend on Tuesday night wearing a black-and-white, leopard-print dress that looked as tough as she plays, AP reports.

After Williams’ straight-set victory, ESPN’s Pam Shriver gave her review in the post-match TV interview, “By the way, the dress is phenomenal.’’

Williams responded with a growl.

It’s not the first such fashion statement for Williams, who is seeded No. 1. On her way to the 2002 title, she wore a skin-hugging, all-black “catsuit,’’ and in 2004 she turned heads in a midriff-baring black top with a pleated blue jean skirt.

Ana Ivanovic is an avid reader – maybe a bit too much, sometimes.

As she struggled with her game in the years after her 2008 French Open title, the Serbian star cracked open more than a few psychology books, searching out the mental keys to regaining her edge.

She eventually had to force herself to cut back.

“I’m sure when you study to be a doctor, you probably start to feel all these pains in your body,’’
Ivanovic said.

FLORIDA MAN CAUGHT KILLING, AND EATING, THREATENED TORTOISES

Wildlife authorities in Florida caught a man who killed and ate 15 gopher tortoises and planned to slaughter 11 more of the threatened reptiles, a spokeswoman said on Thursday.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said a tip-off led an officer to woods in Citrus County on Florida's west coast where he found tire tracks and shells dumped on the ground. Returning the next day, he found a container holding 11 live gopher tortoises.

"He hid himself and waited, figuring the subject would return that afternoon,"
the FWC said in a statement, adding that when the man came back he admitted to feasting on the threatened species.

Katie Purcell, a spokeswoman for the FWC's law enforcement division, said prosecutors were preparing appropriate charges. The 11 tortoises were set free.

The officer involved, Thomas Reid, told a local TV station, WFTS Tampa Bay, the man knew what he was doing was a crime.

"I don't think anyone would hide tortoises out in the woods if they didn't think they were doing anything wrong,"
Reid said.

Florida designates gopher tortoises as a threatened species, meaning it is illegal even to possess one, let alone eat them.

OIL BROUGHT ABOUT CORRUPTION IN AFRICA—FEMI KUTI

Son of late Afro-beat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Femi Kuti, says it is embarrassing if Nigerian and other African leaders do not know things to do for their citizens after winning elections.

Femi, who was on the ‘ONE Agricultural Project’ programme in Washington DC, says he cannot advise the government on what to do because they depend on oil.

The artiste stated that the discovery of oil brought about corruption in Africa, which made his late father to constantly battle the government.

“The problem of Nigeria is that they found oil when the population was small, made lots of money and forgot to farm,”
he stressed

He further noted that Nigerians and Africans have the best brains but do not create an enabling environment for their best brains to showcase what they can do rather, they (best brains) develop other countries, adding that as a citizen of Nigeria, he is embarrassed and ashamed with the Nigerian airport, especially the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

He added that putting the right infrastructure in place like good health care service, good roads, and electricity became a problem because of shared greediness among the leaders.

FALLEN CABLE KILLS WOMAN, SISTER IN LAGOS

A high-tension cable fell on a house and electrocuted a woman and her younger sister on Tuesday morning at Olumokun Street, in the Amukoko area of Lagos.

It was learnt that the cable fell on the residence at about 3am, and subsequently sparked fire, which made many of its occupants to flee for safety.

It was gathered that a woman, identified simply as Mama Ibrahim, with her 12-year-old younger sister, simply called Fatima, were however unlucky as they held on to an iron rod being used for canopy which had already gained current.

It was further gathered that Fatima, who came from Niger State to Lagos on a visit, was the first to hold onto the iron pole and she was electrocuted.

In a bid to rescue her sister, Mama Ibrahim was said to have attempted to pull the teenager off during which she was also electrocuted.

On Tuesday morning when other residents got wind of the deaths, tears flowed freely from their faces as they thronged the residence where the cable had fallen.

An eyewitness, who declined to mention her name, said that the fire generated by the spark nearly spread to other houses but was eventually put off.

She said, “There is a transformer close to the veranda of the affected house. As the electricity sparked on top of the roof, the metre also exploded, and generated fire. The neighbours quickly rushed out to put it off.”
It was further learnt that policemen from the Amukoko Police Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, also came to the scene to put the situation under control, but the victims had already died.

It was gathered that when some officials of the electricity distribution company came to the area, some youths attempted to lynch them for what they described as the officials’ negligence, but for the intervention of the police.

The Lagos State Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Lelma Kolle, promised to call our correspondent back. He had, however, yet to do so as of the time of going to press.
