COUNCILLORS IMPEACH COUNCIL CHAIRMAN IN LAGOS

The battle for supremacy between the Chairman of Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State, western Nigeria, Engineer Fatai Oyesanya and the councillors in the local government got to a head as the councillors sacked the chairman.

The councillors also sent a letter to the state House of Assembly to announce the impeachment of the council chairman.

The lawmakers at the House, however, would not be able to look into the crisis at the council because they are on a recess and are expected to resume on 22 September.

The impeachment, according to sources within the council, took place place on Tuesday 19th August 2014, at the council secretariat on Ikosi Road, Ketu area of the state.

The chairman was impeached following alleged offences including embezzlement of funds, misappropriation of tax payers’ money, disruption of public peace, mal-administration and high-handedness.

A councillor, who would not want to be mentioned, disclosed that all the seven elected councillors in the council, led by their Leader, Owolabi Taiwo, participated in the impeachment exercise.

The other councillors include: Olusola Akerele, Deputy Leader; Stephen Akinyemi, Majority Leader; Olujoke Adekoya, Chief Whip; Bamidele Ajayi; Victor Ajayi-Bembe and Odukunle Kuti.

According to insiders, the motion for Oyesanya’s impeachment was moved by the Majority Leader of the council, Stephen Akinyemi, with the support of his colleagues.

The council Leader, Owolabi Taiwo, was said to have made the pronouncement at exactly 11.15 am.

On Wednesday, the council was said to have been thrown into confusion with thugs storming the council allegedly on the orders of the chairman.

Calls made to Oyesanya’s mobile phones were not reachable at the time of this report. A text message to his phone was not also delivered.

He was also not at the council when journalists visited.
