No fewer than 236 people were arrested by the police inside the Redemption Camp of the Redeemed Christian Church of God after a raid carried out with the help of the security unit of the church.
The Punch, which quoted an unnamed official of the church security says at least 100 security official were involved in what was described as a “routine monthly clean up.”
The Camp is one of the biggest in the country. It hosts millions of people weekly, especially during the monthly Holy Ghost Night vigil programme.
According to the unnamed official, the raid started on Wednesday when church security officials first went around the camp to ask those who did not have genuine reasons to be on the premises to leave.
“On Friday when many of them were still around, over 100 officials made up of the police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Department of State Services, security department of the church and volunteers of the church, went round and some people were taken away by the police,” he said.
The official stated that there was need to ensure the safety of those with genuine reasons to be in the prayer camp.
“We don’t have rapists or armed robbers in the camp. There was just a need to keep the camp safe from people of questionable character,” he said.
The Ogun State Police Command Spokesperson, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the report, said the raid was carried out because people with questionable character might be hiding in the camp after committing crime.
Adejobi said out of the 236 arrested, 165 were male while 71 were female.
He said the raid started at about 2am on Friday.
