Mohamed Bahe, director of the mosque, told Buzzfeed News the dispute began when the two boys approached a man acting "suspiciously" in a car near a side entrance. He was with a woman and the boys were concerned for her welfare. A second man then suddenly ran from across the street and punched one of them, Mr Bahe said.
Surveillance cameras from the mosque show the victim being kicked and punched repeatedly on the ground. The second boy initially ran off but then came back to try and help his friend and was also punched. He said the attacker shouted "you f*ing terrorist". Other members of the mosque then heard the commotion and chased the man away.
One of the victims was left with a concussion., according to Muslims Giving Back, which runs a project feeding the homeless in the area.
