COLOMBIAN BEAUTY QUEEN JULIANA LOPEZ SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS FOR DRUG SMUGGLING
A 23-year-old Colombian model was sentenced to 15 years in prison yesterday and ordered to pay a fine of 20,000 yuan (£2,284) after being caught carrying cocaine in Guangzhou, China.
Juliana Lopez, winner of a Colombian beauty pageant, seemed to have the world at her feet, running a trendy boutique and hosting a television show as well as being a well-known professional football player.
She was allegedly on her way to buy items for her shop on July 18, 2015, when she was discovered at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport with the powder inside a plastic bag, hidden inside her laptop.

Chinese media have reported that she was carrying 610 grams of white powder which when tested was 49 percent cocaine.
She was sentenced to 15 years in prison for drug smuggling and ordered to pay a fine of 20,000 yuan (£2,284) by the Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court on July 25, according Chinese state-run media.
When Ms Lopez was first arrested, it was thought that she could face a death penalty.
The court verdict stated that she had 'pleaded guilty to a good attitude', said Chinese state media.
Ms Lopez was given the lowest sentence possible.
According to section seven of the Criminal Law of the People's Republic of China, those found trafficking drugs into the country can be sentenced to 15 years imprisonment, life in prison or the death penalty.
Upon finishing her sentence, she is required to leave China straight away.
The authority has also confiscated her drug, luggage, laptop, mobile phones and £776 in cash, the report said.
At the time of the incident, Ms Lopez had won the Miss Antioquia beauty pageant and was going to participate in the Miss World Medellin competition.
Her family claimed that she had vanished after she left for China.
She apparently flew into the airport in the city of Guangzhou and it was then that she lost contact with her.
It's been believed that she had been on her way to buy items such as shoes, clothes and other accessories for her shop.
Ms Lopez had been to China before to purchase items for her business.
According to the People's Daily Online, Ms Lopez had confessed that she was asked by a man called Sergio to take the drugs with her to China.
She had reportedly told the court: 'I want to participate in the Miss World competition and needed money so he lent me £2,500 in return for me taking the laptop to China.'
The smiling profile picture of the model's Facebook page was taken on her first visit to China in 2014, and she has since been back to buy goods for her business.

Lobatan! Even these two? Jordan Parke and James Holt have both spent thousands of pounds on procedure to look like Kim Kardashian. But it seems the two have gone into war in a public spat on Facebook.
When James, 22, posted a copy of a recent article about him in a national magazine - which also featured fellow Kim fan Jordan - James spoke about his unhappiness about the comparison.
But Jordan, 25, immediately hit back at the Facebook remarks... leading to an almighty ding-dong.
He wrote: “When someone hates you and you unknowingly pop up and steal the limelight #ByeBoo #OftenImitatedNeverDuplicated.”
James, who has spent £10,000 on his lips alone, responded: “Hate is a very strong word, what makes you think you’re that special? You’re in the corner of my story boo.”

Mr. Hassan-Kukah made the disclosure at a programme organised by the Book Readers’ Club of Ibadan School of Government and Public Policy (ISGPP) in Ibadan on Tuesday.
According to him, government is only fighting corrupt people and not corruption because corruption can only be fought if the nation’s institutions are strengthened.
“Government should begin the fight against corruption from the institution, so that we will not continue to have the same result,’’ he said.
He said that the fight against corruption would be meaningful if it could be tied to governance, noting that corruption was the product of a malfunctioning system.
Mr. Hassan-Kukah thereafter read from his 519-page book `Witness to Justice: An Insider’s Account of Nigeria’s Truth Commission (2011).’
Revealing his memoirs of Oputa Panel, the bishop said reconciliation required probing and interrogation of the past.
He said that Nigerians have failed to understand that they were all wounded, irrespective of ethnicity, religion or political parties.
“Almost all bad things in Nigeria have validation and a lot of Nigerians have gone through several harsh treatments without charges.
“Many of those ethnic leaders are ethnic entrepreneur, who use their people to get what they want.”Mr. Hassan-Kukah said the book also revealed the miscarriage of justice on Bagauda Kato, Dele Giwa and MKO Abiola.
He said the nation could not get reconciliation without putting in place mechanism of distributive justice.
“There is need for mechanism that will guarantee justice for victim, perpetrator and larger society, likewise seeking God.
“Nigerians like blaming the nation’s woes on some persons and are always obsessed of a messiah.
“We need to create elasticity to be able to accommodate the various agitations across the country,’’ he said.
Mr. Hassan-Kukah stressed the need for Nigerians to always respect their leaders, adding that the solution was not to denigrate President Muhammad Buhari.
The cleric called on the media to set agenda for the leaders, while also reminding them of their electoral promises.
Earlier, Tunji Olaopa, the Executive Vice-Chancellor of ISGPP, said the school was an independent think-tank that undertake research on issues of governance.
“We focus on problem-saving around issues on governance, democracy and development through executive education, seminar, conferences and policy dialogue.Prof. Akin Mabogunje, Prof Bolanle Awe, Archbishop Gabriel Abegunrina among others attended the event.
“We create platform for community engagement with a view to getting government to work better and to raise bar of discourse on issues of development,’’ he said.

I SOLD MY SON FOR N300,000 OUT OF FRUSTRATION –18-YR OLD GIRL CONFESSES
The Enugu State Police Command, Tuesday, confirmed has arrested an 18-year-old girl, Okike Ezinne from Isu Mbaneze in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State for allegedly selling her one year and six months old baby.
The teenage mother sold her baby identified as little Chisom Raphael for N300,000.
According the spokesman of the police in Enugu State, SP Ebere Amaraizu, Ezinne blamed her bosom friend for tricking her into selling off her baby. Amaraizu disclosed in the statement that the girl had the baby out of wedlock and decided to keep it but was reportedly tricked to sell off the baby by her friend, one Promise Godwin, a 20-year old single mother.
He said that the suspect narrated that when things were no longer going smoothly for her at home, her bosom friend identified as one Promise Godwin, also from Isu Mbaneze Ohazara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State approached her to come to Enugu with the child with a promise that somebody was going to take care of Ezinne and little Chisom Raphael.
“According to Ezinne, she later joined the friend in Enugu where she secured an accommodation at Coal Camp axis but later found out that the friend has abandoned her husband and was into commercial sex work at Four corners junction, Enugu to make ends meet.
Amaraizu said that police gathered that following the establishment of the sales understanding between Ezinne and Promise with Gloria Okafor, little Chisom Raphael was taken to Limca bus stop at Okigwe, Imo State, along Enugu Port-Harcourt Expressway, Okigwe where Chisom was sold to Gloria Okafor at the rate of N300, 000 and money given to the mother of Chisom in cash.
“On coming back to Enugu, the suspects shared the money as follows:N200, 000 to Ezinne, the mother of the sold child, N50, 000 to Promise, while the remaining N50, 000 went to the motorcyclist working with Godwin Promise at the Four Corner Brothel where she is staying”, he added.
According to Amaraizu, Gloria Okafor, having been nabbed, revealed how she bought the child from the duo of Ezinne and Promise but maintained that the child was later handed over to the buyer that same day and that the buyer was now at large and further revealed that Godwin Promise, who is already 8-month pregnant and also with a child of one year and a month, has also perfected arrangement to sell off the baby whom she named Chiadikaobi to a prospective buyer before they were nabbed by the operatives of the Central Police station of the Nigeria Police, Enugu State command.
“Suspects are now helping police in their investigations and begging for forgiveness but however blamed the situation to act of satan.
